CVE-2026-44720 — Authentication Bypass via Disabled JWT Signature Verification in OpenLearnX

Moderate-severity JWT authentication bypass in OpenLearnX where insufficient signature verification could allow attackers to supply forged tokens and bypass identity validation.

Overview

CVE-2026-44720 is a moderate-severity authentication vulnerability affecting OpenLearnX. Under certain authentication flows, insufficient JWT signature verification could allow attackers to supply forged authentication tokens and bypass normal identity validation.

The issue originated from improper enforcement of cryptographic verification during token processing, creating a scenario where attacker-controlled JWTs could be accepted as valid.

CVE-2026-44720

Technical Description

OpenLearnX uses JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) to maintain authenticated user sessions. In affected versions, certain authentication paths did not consistently enforce signature verification before processing token contents. As a result, specially crafted tokens could potentially be accepted without validating their authenticity.

Proper JWT implementations must always verify:

  • Token signature integrity
  • Supported signing algorithms
  • Token expiration
  • Issuer and audience claims

Failure to enforce these checks may allow attackers to manipulate authentication state.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could potentially allow:

  • Authentication bypass
  • Unauthorized account access
  • Account takeover under affected configurations
  • Forged session tokens
  • Unauthorized access to protected application functionality

The practical impact depends on the application’s deployment and authentication configuration.

Affected and Fixed Versions

Affected< 2.0.3
Fixed>= 2.0.3

Remediation

The vulnerability was fully addressed in OpenLearnX v2.0.3 through:

  • JWT Validation Hardening: Token verification workflow updated to ensure cryptographic signature validation is always performed before any token claims are processed.
  • Authentication Flow Review: All authentication paths audited to ensure consistent security behavior.
  • Cryptographic Control Improvements: Additional safeguards around JWT processing to strengthen trust validation.
  • Defense-in-Depth: Strengthened session validation logic, improved authentication boundary enforcement, enhanced validation of token metadata and claims.
  • Post-remediation codebase security audit and verification.
