CVE-2026-41900 — Remote Code Execution via Sandbox Escape in OpenLearnX

High-severity sandbox escape in OpenLearnX's Python execution environment allows crafted payloads to break out of the restricted runtime and execute arbitrary commands on the host.

Overview

CVE-2026-41900 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting the Python execution environment of OpenLearnX. The issue allowed a crafted payload to escape the intended execution sandbox, potentially leading to arbitrary command execution on the underlying host system.

The vulnerability originated from insufficient restrictions around the sandbox environment and inadequate enforcement of security boundaries between user-supplied code and privileged system resources.

CVE-2026-41900

Technical Description

OpenLearnX provides an isolated Python execution environment for interactive learning and code evaluation.

Due to weaknesses in the sandbox implementation, specially crafted Python code could interact with functionality that should have been inaccessible from the restricted environment. By escaping the intended execution boundary, an attacker could potentially interact with the underlying operating system outside the scope of the sandbox.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could potentially allow:

  • Arbitrary command execution
  • Escape from the restricted execution environment
  • Access to underlying system resources
  • Full system compromise depending on deployment configuration

The overall impact depends on the privileges assigned to the sandbox process.

Affected and Fixed Versions

Affected< 2.0.3
Fixed2.0.3

Remediation

The vulnerability was fully addressed in OpenLearnX v2.0.3 through:

  • Sandbox Hardening: The execution environment was redesigned to enforce stricter isolation between user-supplied code and host system resources. Additional restrictions prevent access to functionality outside the intended sandbox boundary.
  • Execution Policy Improvements: Validation and filtering mechanisms strengthened to ensure only permitted operations can be performed within the execution environment.
  • Privilege Reduction: The sandbox now operates with a more restrictive security model, reducing the impact of potential failures by limiting available permissions and system capabilities.
  • Access Control Enhancements: Internal access controls updated to better separate trusted application components from user-controlled execution contexts.
  • Defense-in-Depth: Improved sandbox boundary enforcement, hardened execution environment configuration, additional validation for user-supplied input, reduced attack surface within the Python runtime.
  • Post-remediation validation confirming the sandbox boundary could no longer be bypassed and user code remained isolated from host system resources.
