CWECWE-307 — Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts

CVE-2026-41037 is a high-severity authentication vulnerability affecting the Quantum Networks Router web management interface. The login endpoint does not implement adequate rate limiting or account lockout mechanisms, allowing attackers to perform unlimited authentication attempts against administrative accounts. This weakness significantly lowers the barrier for brute-force and credential stuffing attacks, potentially leading to unauthorized administrative access.

Technical Details

The router’s administrative login page accepts repeated authentication requests without enforcing protections such as:

  • IP-based rate limiting
  • Account lockout after multiple failures
  • Progressive authentication delays
  • CAPTCHA or additional verification controls

An attacker can continuously submit login attempts until valid credentials are discovered.

Typical Attack Flow

  1. Access the router’s web management interface.
  2. Identify or enumerate a valid username.
  3. Launch an automated brute-force or credential stuffing attack.
  4. Continuously submit authentication requests without restriction.
  5. Obtain administrative access once valid credentials are identified.

Impact

Successful exploitation may allow an attacker to:

  • Gain unauthorized administrative access.
  • Modify network and security configurations.
  • Change DNS settings and redirect traffic.
  • Monitor or intercept network communications.
  • Disable security protections.
  • Maintain persistent access to the affected device.

Root Cause Analysis

The vulnerability originates from insufficient server-side controls around authentication requests. The application fails to restrict excessive login attempts, violating secure authentication best practices described by CWE-307.

A secure implementation should include:

  • Temporary account lockout mechanisms.
  • Exponential backoff delays.
  • IP reputation and rate limiting.
  • Multi-factor authentication support.
  • Monitoring and alerting for repeated failures.

Mitigation

Administrators are advised to:

  • Update to the latest firmware release provided by the vendor.
  • Use strong, unique administrative passwords.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) where available.
  • Restrict administrative access to trusted networks only.
  • Implement external firewall or reverse-proxy rate limiting.
  • Continuously monitor authentication logs for suspicious activity.
